Cost of publishing
Lund University has agreements with several publishers, which provide discounted publication fees for authors from LU in relation to the publishers' list price.
Part of the publication cost is paid by LU centrally and then the rest of the cost is distributed to the faculties based on the size of the research revenue. The faculty, in turn, then invoices the publishing researcher this part of the cost of the publication. The same applies if you publish in pure open access journals that are not included in any of the publishing agreements. At the Faculty of Medicine, this means that everyone who publishes articles, regardless of publication, pays 18,5% of the list price for the publication themselves.
UB pays part of the cost of publication and then distributes the rest of the costs to the faculties. Thereafter, the faculty forwards the remaining cost to the publishing researcher/research group.
This means that you as an author pay 18,5%* of the list price for the publication.
Note: If when you submit your article it says that "your university pays", this means that the university handles the transfer of the money, but you still pay 18,5% of the cost yourself at a later stage.
*This percentage applies to the current time period, but may be adjusted in connection with the next billing period.
UB pays part of the cost of publication and then distributes the rest of the costs to each faculty twice a year, in May and November.
Thereafter, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invoices the publishing researcher/research group these costs.
You who publish will thus receive two invoices per year from the faculty, one in June and one in December, on the 18,5%* of the list price that you must pay.
*This percentage applies to the current time period, but may be adjusted in connection with the next billing period.
Everyone at the Faculty of Medicine who publishes, regardless of publication, must pay for the publication. What you pay is 18,5% of the list price for the publication (the percentage may be adjusted in connection with the next billing).
Note: If when you submit your article it says that "your university pays", this means that the university handles the transfer of the money, but you still pay 18,5% of the cost yourself at a later stage.
Publish free of charge in PLOS, Frontiers and MJS Publishing journals – Publishing fees paid by Swedish research funding bodies.
The Swedish research funding bodies The Swedish Research Council, Forte, Formas, and Vinnova have decided to co-finance the publishing fee with publishers that publish only journals that are fully open access. PLOS, Frontiers, and MJS Publishing are covered by this decision, which means that all researchers and doctoral students associated with Lund University can publish in these journals without any charge to the author or the organisation.
The decision applies to articles accepted for publication after 1 January 2024. The agreement covers all article types.
What does this mean for me as an author?
The agreement provides unlimited open access publication in all journals from PLOS, Frontiers and MJS Publishing. All articles are published under the CC-BY licence. To make it easier for publishers and funders to identify researchers from organisations included in the agreement, it is important to do the following:
- Indicate your affiliation with Lund University in the article and, if possible, in the publisher's manuscript management system.
- Corresponding authors' affiliation with Lund University must be stated in the published article.
- Use the university email (ending with "lu.se") when submitting your manuscript.
More information about the agreement can be found on the University Library's website on open access.
